Join TLI Teaching & Learning Advisor, Mariel Belanger for this in person workshop.
Education, both historically and in contemporary times, has often had detrimental effects on Inuit, First Nations, and their descendants. This began with early encounters, where the impact of European culture was felt through human trafficking, forced capitalism and racism imposed upon Indigenous peoples. Participants in this session will take part in a meaningful cultural activity that explores the origins of the Canadian education system, which was shaped by the legacy of 鈥淚ndian鈥 Industrial and Residential Schools. We will also discuss how advancements in post-secondary education and marketing strategies have created challenges for First Nations communities.
Together, we will identify ways to rebuild trust through personal work, thoughtful policies, syllabi creation and local First Nation inclusive resources.
